I, Douglas Smith, am trying to build a boat. It's my first boatbuilding effort, and my first woodworking effort since I built a maple wall shelf in 7th grade wood shop at Jefferson Jr. High School, Oceanside, CA, in the 60's. It didn't come out all that good.
I am lucky enough to live near Seattle, WA and its faithful companion, Puget Sound. I go out there regularly on a kayak, but I'm a sailor at heart, so I must have this boat. At this writing I'm roughly half-way through building it. I have made every possible mistake, plus some others that aren't even possible.
The boat in question is a Passagemaker Dinghy, a 12-foot sailing dinghy made of African mahogany plywood, epoxy resin and bits of fiberglass. I'm building it from a kit I purchased from Chesapeake Light Craft, a company that sells, uh, boat kits. I began construction in earnest in early January, 2010, and will complete it ... uh ... someday. However long it takes, I'm gonna write about it here. Why wouldn't I?
We'll see how it goes.
